Starting with a crash of synth and heavily delayed guitar, Glenrothes based Tango In The Attic seemingly set their sights high early with this, their second album following up 2010’s Bank Place Locomotive Society album. It’s not too dissimilar to a lot of indie-pop at the moment, very similar in style to Bombay Bicycle Club and Vampire Weekend, even more so when the vocals kick in. It’s a pleasant song, soaked in such a ridiculous amount of reverb. Paradise Institute is fairly nice to begin with, although slightly cursed by its retro style production, with incredibly harsh ‘verb on the vocals. To be honest this is very music led, the staccato lead guitar sounding more important than the vocals over the washy sound of the other instruments. 198 Alpaca is more vocal led, although there’s nothing largely inventive and sometimes it just sounds a bit wrong (“i hit my head against the wall, i wish you’d know it feels”) like they’ve tried desperately to make it fit. Suncream is a bit more pleasant, with its big crashes of guitar in the chorus and distorted bass/synth line, and would be my highlight of the album, despite my dislike of the production …..
