Post War Glamour Girls once said in an interview that they wrote a song about Clay Davies from The Wire, which is to say they should be your new favourite band. But – that sly reference to the man who turned saying Shit into a legitimate hobby aside – this isn’t a band who regurgitate pop culture and spew it out with the help of some guitars. In fact, ‘Tragic Loss, He Had Such A Lovely House’ creates a bleak and uneasy universe to lose yourself in, one that could only come from a band who has pretty clear artistic vision. Opener ‘The Trawler Man’s Code’ is indicative of the bands post-rock roots and the deep – Tom Waits meets Nick Cave in a whiskey gargling contest deep – vocals give the skipping melody a snarling menace. It’s a strong opener that showcases the band’s skill, but the EP’s biggest flaw. Over five minutes long, it’s a hefty song with a multitude of riffs and ideas throughout the song, constantly abandoning one to pick up another and by the time it’s over, it’s cast such a big net, that it lacks a cohesive centre. ‘Today I Am A Man’ is …..
