Garden Window is the debut album from USA based band O’ Brother. Falling nicely into the genre of post-rock and sludge metal, this LP is full of sizzling electric licks and graceful melodies that slide easily into heavy rock beats. It is clear that this album was heavily influenced by the time O’ Brother spent on tour, as the songs try to encapsulate a stage of their lives they will never return to. This period away greatly affected their relationships with family and friends and caused the band to reflect upon reality and how to stay connected with it. This train of thought has developed into a theme of religious scepticism that runs through the entire record like a deep-seated fear in the pit of your stomach. The first track Malum generates a sense of foreboding that punctuates the entirety of the album. This is created not just by the lyrics that question ‘How great is my debt that my penance should be endless?’ but equally in the song’s composition.
