Summary: PS3 owners final get to sample BioWare’s Sci Fi RPG masterpiece on 21 January 2011. The original game was an Xbox and PC only affair due to contractual ties with Microsoft but now BioWare and EA have teamed up everyone can enjoy the fruits of the Canadian studio’s labour.
The game puts you in the shoes of one Commander Shepherd, whose appearance, race and gender you can customize before you start out. As with Dragon Age, you’ll recruit a party of fellow adventurers and be able to direct them in combat as you scuttle around the galaxy facing up to enemies on all manner of fantastic looking planets and their unique environments. The story’s top grade stuff and you’ll dictate the course of your adventure through the many dialogue options you’re presented with when chatting to NPCs. The dialogue system itself is ace, quick flicks and clicks with the analogue stick keeping the pace up.
The PS3 version includes an interactive digital comic that will fill in the story gaps from the first Mass Effect and plenty of bonus content not found in the 360 version of Mass Effect 2 is also promised.
So why should PS3 owners be excited? Well in pure numbers terms, Mass Effect 2 has a Metacritic rating of 96, making it one of the most highly scored games of all time on the site. It also bagged the Ultimate Game Of The Year accolade at the 2010 Golden Joysticks Awards, beating off Modern Warfare 2 in the fans’ vote.
