Terror Bird – All This Time

All The Time is the latest album from Vancouver artist Nikki Nevver. Self-produced over a period of five months, this album is a mix of 80’s goth pop and mellow synth. Think The Smiths meets Kate Bush and The Human League. Unlike previous works it is clear that this album is a more haunting approach to honesty. Evidently Nevver’s turbulent personal life, including the ending of her marriage, has had a great effect on her approach to music causing this album to be a personal, heart-breaking account of love and loss. The first track, ‘The wrong way’ appears to take inspiration from the intro of Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ unfortunately the song does not descend into the same catchy beat but slides into a soft percussion that underlays Nevver’s melodic but slightly depressing vocals that echo throughout as she sings “I never could take joy in hurting someone, that was the old me, that’s not me now.” There’s plenty of reverb and synth within this song that transcends the track from 80’s pop ballad to odd, modern electronica. ‘Take Me Back’ and ‘Elliot’ follow on a similar theme. ‘Take Me Back’s’ repetitive beat is the kind you’d hear in an alternative ….. Poltergeist – Your Mind is a Box (Let Us Fill It With Wonder)

Featuring post-punk band Echo and the Bunnymen members Les Pattinson and Will Sergeant, along with drummer Nick Kilroe, band Poltergeist offers surprisingly rich experimentation to the post/space-rock scene. The eight-track, approximately-one-hour-long debut album, Your Mind is a Box (Let Us Fill It With Wonders), is direct about their goal. And, fortunately, achieves it. Instrumental music is often difficult to make interesting to the modern youthful ear. But using truly amazing hard rock guitar, pulsating bass, and steady drums, Poltergeist has and will hold your attention for the duration of the album. And once the additional sounds make an entrance, stage left and right, they won’t just hold; they’ll enrapture. Opener ‘Cathedral,’ released in January as a single, doesn’t reveal the cards of the album. But it does let you know the general ambience of what will come next. The neo-psychedelic influences (Echo and the Bunnymen are a pioneer of that particular genre), the shoegaze-y riffs, and an overall unobtrusive, streamlined sound come together seamlessly. Title track ‘Your Mind is a Box (Let Us Fill It With Wonder)’ dips into the space rock genre a little more deeply, including a gem of a guitar solo. Even after ‘Dreamer Dreams of Spectrums’ ….. Queens Of The Stone Age – …Like Clockwork

Somewhere in the six years between Era Vulgaris and …Like Clockwork, Josh Homme died. In the middle of routine knee surgery, complications arose and Homme woke to a doctor telling him they’d briefly lost him. Several months of not being able to move followed and Homme’s outlook changed. In the midst of the Queens Of The Stone Age hiatus, he’s had side-project Them Crooked Vultures and production on an Arctic Monkeys album to keep him busy; it’s all conspired together to result in the sound of …Like Clockwork, a neatly ordered, dark, occasionally beautiful record that portrays a band unafraid to take risks just by slowing it down a notch. As work progressed on ‘Clockwork’, we were all psyched up for Songs For The Deaf phase II, with Mark Lanegan, Nick Oliveri and Dave Grohl all returning to the scene of the band’s greatest triumph. It’s perhaps cynically representative of modern music that the best we can dare hope for from a band’s new album is something that sounds exactly like a previous success. ‘…Like Clockwork’ is nothing like ‘Songs For The Deaf’; it’s a different sort of rabid beast. ‘Keep Your Eyes Peeled’ is the opener and it’s as ….. The Wytches/Drenge @ The Joiners, Southampton – 6/6/13

Fresh off the back of being named Britain’s Best Small Venue, the atmosphere pre-gig outside The Joiners is the epitome of laid-back and loving life. The few punters that are milling about are enjoying ciders in the sunshine whilst down the side-alley of the venue Drenge are playing football and The Wytches drummer attempts to source beer without walking too far. It pretty aptly sets the tone for the evening, in which pure musical enjoyment is the only thing on the agenda– for both the band and the audience. For those that venture in to the back room of The Joiners before the sun set, they got a chance to catch the first support of the evening, Shotaways. If ever there is a band unsure of what direction to head in musically, it is these guys. They’ve got rock undertones that are reminiscent of early Kings of Leon but there’s also a helping of blues, indie and they’ve even got the mainstream rock-come-pop sound down too. That’s not to say they are bad, it’s just to say that they are spreading their musical scale too thinly for it to be anything beyond decent. Although credit has to be given to ….. Continue Reading

Cocorosie – Tales of a Grass Widow

Cocorosie brings to mind ethereal experimentation taken to a nearly celestial level. The sound of brushing teeth, dissonant chords, and vocals that should be uncomfortable to listen to, but somehow isn’t — they’re all things that Cocorosie have pulled off, and the reason why they’re the avant-garde darlings to the audiophiles of the underground, the prime example of freak-folk gone wonderfully right. But perhaps they’d set their own bar too high — Tales of a Grass Widow, despite high expectations, turned out to settle on the side of disappointment. Admittedly, it’s not fair to expect something from an artist — they’re free to make whatever sound they want to make. But Cocorosie has a reputation for out-there creativity, something that turned out to be largely missing in the music (the lyrics, however, are still undeniably brilliant). ‘After the Afterlife,’ set to piano and clap-beats, guides you into the album, creating a fantasy atmosphere that could have been improved if the melody of ‘Welcome to the afterlife’ had been tinkered with slightly more. ‘Tears for Animals’ is arguably the best song of the album. Aching with bass, it packs an emotional punch — just enough to keep you focused for the ….. Continue Reading
